"Make 10" Gets A Hotfoot

Midtown Manhattan was a gridlocked mess Monday May 5, 1997,as a 6 alarm fire destroyed a mixed occupancy type building at 1016 Avenue of the Americas. The fire started in the basement of the 5 story 25 x 75 brick building and eventually spread to all 5 floors.

The workers of the "Make 10" shoe store on the 1st floor noticed an odor of smoke around 10 A.M. They discovered smoke issuing from an area behind the electrical service panel and called the Fire Department. By the time firefighters arrived the basement was filled with smoke and was very hot.

The basement was stocked floor to ceiling with empty shoeboxes making it difficult to reach the deep seated fire. Maze-like conditions and interconnected cellars also contributed to the delay in accessing the fire. With unsafe conditions and a deteriorating building the decision was made to use high expansion foam.

The huge amount of stock prevented the foam from extinguishing the blaze so they reverted back to the use of hand lines. As the fire raged on invisibly, the building's structure was compromised and an exterior operation began.

The 2nd floor soon collapsed and 90% of the remainder of the building collapsed at 2045 hours that night while tower ladders were pouring water into it. A secondary collapse occurred a short time later taking a part of exposure 4 with it. To prevent further collapse, N.Y.C. Transit suspended service on the "F" & "D" line subways.

All 16 families that lived on the top 3 floors lost everything but the clothes they were wearing.
